Price 30,000.00 USD, down payment 5,000.00 USD, vehicle traded in for 4,000.00 USD with debt of 1,000.00 USD, and 1,200.00 USD of financed expenses: the loan starts at 23,200.00 USD. At 6 % nominal annual rate fixed for 60 months, the ordinary installment is 448.52 USD, the interest totals 3,711.26 USD and the total amount paid for the loan is 26,911.26 USD. The last installment is adjusted to 448.58 USD.

How it is calculated

The financed amount is price minus down payment minus trade-in vehicle value, plus outstanding debt on that vehicle and financed expenses. The net trade-in is value minus debt.
The down payment and upfront fees paid at the start occur before the first period; they do not appear as payments in the table.
We divide the nominal annual rate by 12. Each month we calculate interest on the balance at the start of the period, round to the minor currency unit of the chosen currency and apply the installment, one-time extra, and monthly extra. The last installment may vary.
The chart only divides the amount paid toward the loan between principal and interest. The trade-in vehicle value is not a modeled cash outlay.

Assumptions and limits

This is an educational scenario, not a bank offer or a contractual quote. You enter the amount for taxes and expenses: the tool does not calculate local rates nor promise that expenses or previous debt can be financed. A daily rate, precalculated interest, contractual APR, fees or payment application rules may produce a different installment or interest. Insurance, fuel, maintenance, depreciation and any expense you do not enter are also excluded.

The CFPB explains the effect of the down payment and the trade-in, warns about incorporating previous debt and distinguish simple interest from precalculated interest. Confirm amounts, payment dates, and conditions with your lender.

Before comparing with an offer

Check the balance required to settle the loan of the traded-in vehicle, the exact amount of taxes and fees, which items are financed, and the payment schedule. If any change, re-enter them: the installment and interest may vary even if the car price remains the same.
